Climbing Roses outside your front gate, along an arbor, over a trellis, or anywhere that they can adhere to something is always a romantic touch. Climbers are a different variety from Rose bushes and produce a flatter shape.
What I've learned from buying Rose bushes is that it is important to buy "own root" bushes and not "grafted" ones. Own root Roses can be bought through reputable garden catalogs such as Old Heirloom Roses. You are guaranteed that your rose will always remain its true color. "Grafted" on Rose bushes are the color you buy them the first year. After that you will probably wind up with the color it originally was before it was grafted. A pale pink can turn up deep red the next year and bring you great disappointment as well as ruining your color scheme.
My favorite movie star and actress from the 1940's is Joan Fontaine, who has a namesake Rose. I was thrilled to come across this dainty white rose in the Old Heirloom Roses catalogue. They also feature other famous people's namesake Roses. You can imagine the fullness of the Dolly Parton Rose.
I bought several of the Joan Fontaine Rose bushes and planted them in our secret garden. They have a long bloom period and are still in bloom every year for Miss Fontaine's birthday, October 22nd. I always press one into a birthday card and send it along to her. She evens writes back to me.
I love having Rose of Sharon trees everywhere on the property. Rose of Sharon will grow anywhere under most conditions. They come in white, pink and lavender colors. All beautiful. As they flourish in our garden our gardener Barbara will transplant some, divide others and put them in areas where we might want to block out a neighbor's fence or use as a filler where other flowers won't thrive.
I love Sterling Silver Roses, Blue Moon Roses, White Roses, Pale Pink Roses and on and on. Who doesn't love a Rose?
